Global Mobile Ad Brokerage Does Big Business in SA

AdMobI just saw that AdMob recently served its 5billionth mobile ad. Wow.

What was extra-interesting is that South Africa is their second largest market globally. 15% of their ad impressions are served here – close to 70million a month.

The publishers in AdMob’s network have been categorised into five primary content channels. Of the five channels, ‘Communities’ and ‘Downloads’ far outweigh ‘Portals’, ‘News and Information’, and ‘Entertainment’ in terms of traffic. The traffic breakdown by channel is:

1. Communities: 45 %
2. Downloads: 44%
3. Portals : 8%
4. Entertainment: 2%
5. News and Information: 1%

The most popular channel, Community, contains sites that have aggregated user content in some form or another. These mobile sites may include discussion groups, mobile page building services, forums, or even dating sites.

I might be stating the obvious, but the prevalence of Community and Downloads at the top of the list confirms that people are still far more interested in using their handsets to keep up with their friends than they are interested in consuming commercially produced content on the small screen.

Petrol Price Trade-off: Johnnie’s Walking

Nice advertising remix here, definitely not produced by the agency:

Johnie's Walking

Petrol or Johnnie Walker whiskey? They cost pretty much the same.

Honda Goes for Green

Honda Globe F1 racing carHonda recently decided to forego advertising on their F1 racing car in favour of an image of the world – to promote the perception of Honda being environmentally friendly…. and raising money for environmental causes through the website associated with the car, myearthdream.com

Instead of the $100million or so they’d get for selling ads on their car, they’re using the million dollar homepage idea and selling 1.2million pixels of adspace on a virtual car on the site – which will then appear on the real car next season. If you buy adspace on the car, you’re also asked to select an environmentally friendly pledge to take – stuff like turning the thermostat down a degree or installing 3 energy saving light bulbs

There’s quite obviously alot of money to be made by appealing to the Greenies, there’s alot of emotion attached to the Global Warming crisis right now (just ask Robert). Honda has created a campaign that is bold, creative, buzz-worthy, and most importantly, makes a positive difference by getting people involved in doing environmentally friendly stuff.

A Simple Viral Promotion Tactic

As an experiment, Eric’s creating a list of SAbloggers who link to his popular Mobile Q&Asite.
This got me thinking about the most basic and easily replicatable viral formula for online social media:

  • Offer a prize in return for people linking to you from their blog or social-networking page.
  • Set criteria – e.g. “Valid for first 100 mentions only”
  • Tell the blogger to notify you when it’s up.
  • Follow through on your promise of reward.

You can really get creative with this structure – for example, by asking people to create their own banner ads as links for the promotion/competition.

Do you think that this type of promotion will pollute the conversations happening in the blogosphere?
