Two New South African Podcasts for the New Year

I've found that podcasts are really good for my fitness and productivity. Why? Well a) they keep me entertained while running or gyming and b) I learn relevant and interesting stuff in the process.

I think podcasting in South Africa is going to boom this year for at least 3 reasons:

1. Millions of people will have Mp3 players on their cellphones,

2. The mobile web will become far more user-friendly

3. The potential demand will drive more people to produce podcasts

My experience with podcasting is that it's more intimate than blogging, because it's easier to connect with someone's voice than their written word

I'd encourage brand managers to keep an eye on this trend, and to consider sponsoring some local podcasts. It takes a lot of effort to produce a quality podcast, so a little financial incentive can go a long way to keeping podcasters going.

Here are two that I've been notified of by email this week:

The Brendan JACKast:
We meet various locals and visitors to our shores, mostly from the comedy
and entertainment field.
Topics are varied and unpredictable, including local goings-on, current
world events, and how they impact on South Africa... all discussed by mostly
opinionated and not-very-serious guests.
(Although we have sent out meeting requests to Nobel Prize winners, but
they're all too busy on Twitter to speak to us at the moment.
Perhaps one day.)

The Digital Edge:
The Digital Edge is a new weekly podcast brought to you by Cambrient which will expose you to the inner workings of digital marketing, and profile some of the biggest stories in the business.

I like your thinking. Although, I think podcasts will remain a geek thing. But gyming with a podcast in your ears is a great idea. Trying it out tonight.

The gym podcast thing is a must - I'm not a big fan of the Virgin Active playlist.

Great post, Dave. And thanks for the heads up on those links. I personally think that this will also be the year of mobile games...but for gym and exercise, this is a fabulous idea.

I've had many listeners to my podcast email me telling me they listen to our show in the gym. Better listen to content that interests you then cycling through your playlist for the 100th time.

Glen, good point. Tonight will be my first attempt at podcasts in the gym. Quite looking forward to it.
