eMarketing Guide Published Under the Creative Commons

Congratulations to the Quirk team who have just released the first edition of their eMarketing textbook. Just before it was published I was sent a digital copy to review, and I found it to be thorough, well written and full of good examples and explanations.Furthermore, the book has been published under the Creative Commons. This means that if you download or buy the book, you can copy, remix and share it with as many other people as you like (as long as you don't sell your copies). I believe will go a long way in increasing the knowledge and expertise of eMarketing in South Africa.
All delegates on the upcoming Nomadic Marketing programme in October will get a copy of this book, and I think that it will help re-enforce all the fundamentals of eMarketing which are necessary in order to create truly extrodinary campaigns.

Dave - this is an incredible initiative which deserves enormous praise. The local emarketing industry is still fledgling given the problems this country has had with access and the draconian advantage Telkom has had. With the telecoms revolution and huge investment in infrastructure for 2010 access and broadband will boom, as will all the industries associated with the internet. What Quirk have done is to share IP with everyone at a time that is pre-boom. While it's a smart marketing act, it can also be seen as a give - a generosity in sharing knowledge. Something that should be strongly applauded.

Lists are going to notice steep increases in unsubscribe requests when they believe they are being over sold. It is a good idea to send some emails with just tips or information on the topic most of the time. Your actual product sale emails should be as infrequent as possible to increase the value to the customer. Some email management services allow you to check how many of your emails are read. When the amount of emails that are read decreases consider taking a small hiatus from sending emails. This could be several days or a week. Keep customers informed through a blog or social media account.

Hands down, Apple's app store wins by a mile. It's a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I'm not sure I'd want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
