SA Internet Statistics Wiki

I was preparing for a presentation yesterday which required statistics of internet and Mobile use in SA, and really struggled to find up to date information for free online.

I see a need for a central place where people in our industry can freely access stats and other information.
This kind of info will help us make more informed strategic decisions

So, to get the ball rolling, I've set up a wiki called SAnetstats.pbwiki.com and placed the scraps of information I was able to discover on there, and I'd like to encourage anyone who has stats that are pertinent to internet, mobile, broadband and media industry in SA to contribute since it will be beneficial to the industry as a whole.

Maybe it will grow into a little Wikipedia kind of site for the SA internet consulting industry... hopefully:)

Nice Dave. I like keeping track of internet and mobile stats, so when I find some I'll be sure to update. :)

How many (active) bloggers in SA? Any stats?

2000?

March 21, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterJoe

damn right Dave - was looking for the CURRENT stats for online usage.. I headed over to myadsl & to the font of online research: chilibean Paul, yet still found nothing that was running as a live or updating feed for ZA mobile & internet usage.
Would love to see what comes up on the wiki.
Thanks.. it's a gr8 idea, especially for those of us having to do presentations!

This is a good idea in principle but in practise is flawed. Lets take Internet stats for example. You've listed the number from WorldInternetStats which says South Africa has over 5 million Internet users. Arthur Goldstuck said in his Online Industry Summit presentation its only 3.75 million. SAARF lists a number that is really very low at 2.3 million users.

And so you have to ask which source is the most authoritative.

Secondly why set-up a wiki especially for this when Wikipedia is already the #1 online resource for information? Contributing to Wikipedia is much more valuable for the whole community.

Joe: I've created a section on the wiki there for blogs. I currently don't have anything... hopefully we can piece something together with the help of Amatomu.com

Ramon
: I must say that I disagree with your points:

The idea is that we chip in ALL the information and reference it too. If you have anything to add, please don't hold back.

Secondly - Wikipededia is enormous, and sometimes very specialised information like this gets lost... Which is why we need SA specific site's like Amatomu.com and Muti.co.za

As one of SA's leading proponents for online education, I sincerely hope that you'll contribute:)

Alrighty then - if there is research the obscure-knowledge-machine known as Max will no doubt find it 8-)

Updated regularly this is one of the best sites for cross-comparative global internet stats: this is the one for Africa in particular

I am very interested to know the age breakdown for the SA internet usage market. I have a theory that most of the users are in fact aged 40 and above but would love to know how I can prove it!

I am very keen on seeing some more statistics re: mobile usage, per household etc LSM breakdown - will be interesting.

October 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterR*Star

We are currently looking for stats on keyword phrase popularity among SOUTH AFRICAN Internet users - in other words what are South Africans typing into Google.co.za and other SA search engines to find products etc.?

Only stats on other countries, especially the USA, are available.

Can anyone help?
