Stii and Gerry are organising a kickass geekdinner in Kwelanga, George on February 9th.
GeekDinners, as some of you may already know, are about free and open-idea sharing in an informal atmosphere in the interests of connecting South Africa’s top internet innovators.
This is sure to be one of the most enjoyable GeekDinners we’ve yet had – wow, a roadtrip to a Garden Route Country Retreat for good 2.0wine and meeting some super-smart tech people. What a pleasure!
Uno mentioned that we could use his Vito bus if we can get about 8 people from Cape Town to make a roadtrip there with. So far we have 5 people in – so put yourself onto the wiki and drop us a mail if you wanna join us!

The inaugural 27 dinner in Joburg lastnite was sooo much fun, and so productive in terms of meeting awesome people to do business with. I see that there are lots of others writing about the dinner already so I’ll leave in depth coverage to those who didn’t drink quite as much Stormhoek as I did.
What I do remember quite clearly though is that Mike, Carl and I officially launched our company, Cerebra, at the event! *yay*
We are already doing work with some of the jeeks* who were there lastnite, and it seems that we’ll be collaborating with some others in the near future… Hence, I think it was the perfect occasion for the announcement.
There are some photos of the event here.
* the official definition of a “jeek” is: Someone who succeeds at the nexus of media, technology and business.

Sorry to everyone who tried to comment on this blog in the last week or so and got an error message in return.
My group of Web AddiCTs have had a thorough look at the problem and told me the problem was the result of a freak timing coincidence on the comments database:
What happens is the database tries to execute 2 operations on a specific table at precisely the same time and the database sits in deadlock not knowing which process to execute forever. It’s really rare, since were talking about exactly the same time done to the microsecond and there are supposed to be controls in the database to prevent it from happening, but it sometimes slips.
Eish.
I’ve got some smart people from Afrihost working on it, and I’ll start posting again as soon as it’s sorted.
UPDATE: Afrihost didn’t have a backup of the database, so I lost all my comments
As Henk said to me:
“There are 2 kinds of people: Those who make backups and those who haven’t had a full system failure yet”

Buzzword of the day: Prosumer. It’s been around since the 70’s when Alvin Toffler proposed that consumers are becoming producers – in other words that they’re getting involved in customizing their experiences of products and services to their tastes in ways that large companies couldn’t.
Of course, this idea of “Prosumerism” is gaining serious ground thanks to the internet where even our love songs can be customized to suit our tastes, and where customers are even producing adverts on behalf of the brands they love (or hate).
Adidas recently did a campaign where they put up blank white billboards with a small logo, inviting graphiti artists to come and spray and write on them. Then after a while they placed another poster with a hole in the shape of a shoe on top of the graphiti – hence showing a one-of-a-kind shoe ad co-created with Adidas and their target market.
Awesome. Consider next time you’re doing an ad how you could get people to interact with it and customize it to their taste.
